Bartolomeo Manfredi

late 17th century

Painting

Bartolomeo Manfredi (1582-1622) is traditionally the best Caravaggio’s follower. He was born in Ostiano, near Cremona. He carried out his activity in Rome, where he was the inventor of a particular light and shade scheme known as “manfrediana methodus”, which was then followed by several Nordic and French painters.

The subject is very rare and emotionally intense, it is not included in the Gospels, but it probably derives from the Transitus Mariae, an apocryphal Apocalypse which dates back to the end of the 4th and the beginning of the 5th century and which was extremely popular.
