The martyrdom of St Peter from Verona

Museo Civico "Ala Ponzone"

St. Domenico room

Giovanni Battista Trotti (1556-1619)

Malosso

late 16th century

Painting

The altarpiece, commissioned by the Ongaretto brothers, was made by Malosso respecting all the clauses included in the contract. The composition, in fact, represents St Peter and a friend of his, overpowered by a scoundrel while the Virgin Mary with St. Girolamo watches the scene from the top, on the clouds. Differently from the Beheading of St. John the Baptist, this painting was not appreciated by the critics, probably because of the lack of liberty that the painter was given and because of the constraints included in the contract, which were totally respected.
