Prediction of John the Baptist in the Desert

Museo Civico "Ala Ponzone"

Room of the 16th Century

Galeazzo Ghidoni (1590/1651)

1598

Painting

The painting was born as an altarpiece of San Giovanni Battista altar in San Mattia Church, wanted by the Consorzio della Donna. Giovanni Battista, in profile, at the center of the scene and on a rise in the ground, has a special iconic value as it becomes the central point in the crowd all around. Among all the participants we can identify a man with a red mantle and a man with a turban who seems to invite the observer in the scene: they are both inspired by the Campi’s culture and, in particular, by Antonio (Ghidoni was one of his apprentices).
